Most men don’t talk about their emotions and it’s running their lives in the background.
Let’s change that.
But first… let’s take a look at why.
And if you are a female reader, don’t worry, this article is for you as well. Just need to acknowledge the notion that men are hundreds of years behind in expressing our emotions….
Now you are probably wondering, what the heck does this have to do with running a business?
Hear me out.
Men are taught to be tough. Men are taught to suck it up. Men are taught to be strong. Men are taught not to show emotions.
Does this mean we don’t FEEL emotions?
Of course we do! We aren’t robots (Most of us at least. You never know with AI nowadays)
The fear, sadness, grief…. Even joy. We bury it. We bury it until some “asshole” cuts us off in traffic and then next thing you know we are raging. Letting our suppressed emotions out in the form of uncontrolled anger.
Sound familiar?
Let me let you in on a little secret.
How we do one thing is how we do everything. If we as business owners are unable to effectively process and feel our emotions, I guarantee you they are affecting your business.
Think about it for a second.
All of the stress of running a business, building up in your body day in and day out. It is raising your cortisol levels (stress hormone), elevating your heart rate, affecting your sleep, affecting your energy levels, so you reach for more caffeine, which only actually delays your fatigue (thank you Huberman for teaching us this) and increases more cortisol.
It’s a viscous cycle and it is affecting the way you think. The way you communicate. The way you grow your business. Everything.
Pent up stress and emotions are killing you according to the science of longevity (Check out Dr. Peter Attia online for more on the science of longevity). Now, let’s look at some healthy ways to manage these emotions shall we?
Here are a number of proven ways to release these negative emotions from the body so you can think clearly and feel better in life.
Intense cardio (Running, Swimming, Biking, CrossFit).
10 Mins of Journaling.
Workout.
Meditation.
Talking with a Licensed Therapist.
Dancing.
Breathwork.
Boxing/Martial Arts.
Yoga.
Pilates.

Framework: Emotional Inventory Exercise (5 mins)
Below is a simple 4 step process to begin bringing awareness to how your stress and emotions are impacting your life. We can’t create solutions to problems we don’t see yet. Once we are aware, we can start to make changes!
Step 1: Write down where you feel stress in the body. (Neck, shoulders, lungs, stomach, low back, throat, eyes, etc).
Step 2: Identify what negative emotions you are feeling on a daily basis. (Fear, anxiety, sadness, loneliness, anger, etc)
Step 3: Make a list of 2-3 things you can do each day to move these emotions through the body. I recommend daily walks outside, deep abdominal breathing, some form of rigorous exercise.
Step 4: Journal how you are feeling every day for 30 days. Track your progress!
